PILOT COURSE ON ADVANCED DESIGN OF REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

Note: A basic knowledge of thermodynamics, air conditioning plants and psychrometric chart is required.

First day: Wellness conditions Rules and practice, set point changing during seasons. Fresh air quantities, how much air to change related to people’s and building pollution; residential, commercial, offices, hospitals. The importance of filtering to reduce fresh air quantity.

Thermal load calculation using equivalent Delta T method, basics and application with software.

How to divide a complex room, concept of space and zone.

Thermal load, total and sensible, as variable quantity and as a diagram. Information from thermal load diagram: peak load, base load, changing speed, modulation amplitude.

Basic transformation on psychrometric chart: air mix, sensible heating, sensible and latent heating, sensible cooling, sensible and latent cooling, dehumidification cycle, adiabatic humidifying, steam humidifying, thermal factor S/T, charge line, free cooling, heat and cool recovery.

Calculation of:

• pre and post heating in winter conditions
• cooling and post heating in summer conditions
• air flow in winter and summer conditions
• air flow as function of cooling air temperature
• ratio used-cooling/produced-cooling

Second day: How to save energy with.

• heat and cool recovery (adiabatic cooling of expelled air)
• minimizing and modulating fresh air flow
• modulating water temperature produced by chillers
• free cooling

The importance of correct control and regulation strategy and well sized system.

Refrigerants and refrigeration circuit:

• Common refrigerants and natural refrigerants
• basics of thermodynamic cycle using Pressure/Enthalpy diagram
• comparison between various refrigerants EER, COP, TEWI

Direct expansion systems:

• types and characteristics:
• monosplit
• multisplit
• variable speed compressors (inverter)
• VRF
• VRV

Chillers:

• types and characteristics:
• air cooled
• water cooled
• full power and partial load efficiency

A strategy to select plant type as a consequence of:

• thermal load diagram
• building characteristics
• wellness conditions
